Descending From Greatness (The Descendants Review)

I just love award-season, because this is truly the time of year when the note-worthy and best films are released. George Clooney strikes gold again with this heartwarming family movie (not a movie to see with the whole family, but rather describing a movie about a family).

The Performances
A film that is packed with so many great actors! George Clooney is first up with his honest take on a father just trying to make things right, doing his best to do the right thing (even though at times it may be hard for him to know just what that is exactly). It’s about the bond he shares with his daughters (or rather the lack there of in which he tries to rekindle). And let’s talk about Shailene Woodley. I’ve never been a fan of hers, mainly because of the fact that she reduced herself to starring in THE most ridiculous show on television: The Secret Life of the American Teenager. But after this movie, I am completely blown away at the natural talent this girl has! For crying out loud, she cries underwater! Who the hell is capable of doing that without it looking ridiculous or over-done?!!!

The Backdrop
Hawaii is simply beautiful. That’s enough said! From the clear waters, to being able to drive along the coast with your windows down, it just seems like paradise. And it wasn’t just all beach resort locations they showed in the film. There were actual neighborhoods, places to go to instead of just the beach. Hawaii was a beautiful backdrop for a perfect film.

The Heart
There are so many things that pull at the heart throughout the film. But the common thread throughout all of it is the family connection, the bond that starts to strengthen as the film goes on. What starts out as awkward and frightening to watch turns into heartwarming relationships that feel natural and far from being forced.

Final Thoughts
The story is heartbreaking enough. A distant father/husband takes care of his daughters and tries to rekindle the relationship he has with them while his wife lays in a hospital bed unconscious. If that set-up alone doesn’t get you to see this movie, then go with the beautiful background that is Hawaii. The Descendants does a great job balancing light humor, heart, and drama all in one.

Oscar Predictions?
Seeing as how nominations for other award shows have begun: Best Picture, Best Director for Alexander Payne, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for George Clooney, and Best Supporting Actress for Shailene Woodley.

FINAL GRADE: A+
