Young Awkward, Crazy, Psychotic, Sad, Depressing Adult (Young Adult Review)

This film was a bit over-hyped. It was dark, it still had some funny-ish moments, but overall was a little disappointing.

The Performances
Charlize Theron was spot on as an awkward, crazy, psychotic, sad, depressing, sadistic, alcoholic creeper. For that reason alone (and for the dedication and effort put in to the role) she deserves at least a Golden Globe nomination (which she has already been recognized for). Patton Oswalt was endearing and a great sigh of normal relief from all of the awkwardness and craziness of Theron’s character. Although there scene together towards the end definitely took the whole film to a completely different level of creep, awkward, unnecessary, and weird. Overall, these were really the only performances worth mentioning.

The Tone
It started out funny for the wrong reasons. It was quiet and awkward and took a really long time to build up to something. And even when the story built up to something, it was a let-down. There were no real dynamics. The whole film just felt depressing and sad. Is that supposed to be on purpose? Was that the whole meaning from the beginning?

The Overhype
Come on now! The last time Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody collaborated, it was for Juno. Of course there were high expectations! And everyone keeps talking about how hilarious this film is! I was majorly disappointed in the lack of comedy throughout the film. It was supposed to be a dark comedy, but felt more like a sad waste of time. I laughed here and there, but mostly it was for the wrong reasons and during times when no one should be laughing.

Final Thoughts
The concept and story is genius, but the final product is a bit mixed for my taste.

Oscar Predictions?
Despite their nominations already for this films, come Oscar time, I can really only see this movie getting at least a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Patton Oswalt if anything…

FINAL GRADE: C
